I have a 1987 140hp Johnson that stalls when I open her up. I can run all day long at 3/4 power but the moment I go wide open it sputters and stalls. I though it was a fuel problem so I got fresh fuel, fuel filter, new fuel lines, new plugs and wires and ran a heavy dose of seafoam and carb cleaner through the engine.

Do I need to rebuild the carbs or could it be a tunning issue or am I missing something obvious?

Has this ever worked for you or did you just buy the rig or just put it on this boat for the first time?

It sounds like a carb cleaning issue. Since it stalls when you try to get high fuel flow I'd say you have one or several float valves stuck closed or clogged up so you're running out of fuel in the bowls and starving it out completely rather than just lacking good flow.

If it's new to you and you've never had it work well you might just want to buy 4 carb kits, but if you know the carb kits in them are pretty new then you can re-use them. Everything in your carbs is fixed and there's no adjustment. You just take it all apart, hose it down with a LOT of cleaner, blow out the jets and idle circuits with compressed air, more cleaner, more air, and reassemble once you're satisfied that there is no more gunk.

Sounds simple enough. Any tricks I need to know about rebuilding a outboard carb? Or is it mostly just remembering how to put it back together the way you took it off. Also is there anything I should check while I have the cards off? Thanks.

make sure your carb flaps or not going beyond full you may allready be at full when you say you at 3/4
