1987 Johnson problem

I have a 1987 Johnson 40 hp outboard that ran fine last season and after working on it to adjusting for loss of reverse top speed is just over 5 mph with no wake. I opened the cover while on the water to try to manually increase the throttle but all adjustments were wide open. The only thing that would slightly increase the power was pushing in the key to actuate the choke. The only other thing I did to it since it last worked properly was change the prop. The new one is in much better shape than the original that was pretty banged up. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Jesse

Re: 1987 Johnson problem

While you are running have a buddy with a timing light check for spark. Sounds like you are running on one cylinder. Probably a bad coil.

Thanks i'll check that out. I'll let you know what I find. I did change the plugs last season and it ran great after I did but maybe something like the coil has gone bad since. Thanks again

Make sure you let us know. If that doesn't work we'll look elsewhere.
