The motor is a 1987 Mariner 50 - 3cyl - 2 stroke. Need to find out if it has a thermostat and if someone can tell me where it is located it would be most appreciated. The Seloc manual is zero help with this.

The thermostat, if one exists, would either be under the exhaust manifold cover on older models, or under a separate, smaller cover on newer models.

You'll need to note your serial number, then if you look up the parts diagram for your motor at the following listed site, you should be able to figure this out:

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectSerailRange.asp?doc_nbr=50+(3+CYL.)

Note that depending on which diagram you look at, there is either a separate listing for the "exhaust and manifold covers", and if you don't see that, check under the "cylinder block" listing.

IMHO you're most likely to not have a 'stat but the diagrams will confirm or deny.

BTW are you having some sort of cooling problem that leads you to believe there's a thermostat involved??

Re: 1987 Mariner 50 Thermostat?

Ed thanks very much for the response, I will check those things out.

Yes cooling problem. Had successfully installed a new (complete) water pump impeller kit two seasons ago. She ran great and everything was fine. Didn't use the boat but a couple of times that season. Didn't use it last season at all but started and let it run for about 15 min. ea time, twice last summer - peeing cool water/no problems. This season fired up the engine and she pee'd strong but then water went very hot for about 30 seconds then stopped peeing completely. Dropped the LU to check it out. Housing is a ok. Impeller looked ok other than the fingers a little bent but nothing broken. Don't have the knowledge to go any further with troubleshooting. So this is where I'm at right now.
