My tilt and trim is the "B" style with 3 rams and 3 wires.

It has been working and then all of a sudden all I get is the clicking noise from the solenoids. I have checked all wires and replaced all connections and replaced even the fuses. I need to test the motor on it but the Seloc manual I have does not cover that.

At first I thought it must be a short in the wiring but I have been unable to find one and after doing all the voltmeter test everything seems to be fine. I am thinking the next step is to test the motor but I am not sure how to do this and could use some " LAYMAN TERM" help.:D

BTW, it work fine just yesterday and will not go up or down and only noise you hear is the solenoid clicking.

Thanks in advance guys!!!!!

Thanks for the reply! Do you remember which wire was pinched to cause this?

Re: 1987 Mercury 45hp tilt and trim question

OK I found the short it is right at the neck where it goes into the motor. Can I take the top off the motor and get to the wires inside to replace them or do I have to take the entire unit off? Also can you buy a replacement harness or do I just need to replace the individual wire?

I cut back some of the black tubing and it is soaked in oil and there was a small amount of smoke coming out as we were raising and lower the engine. Is this normal? If not where would all this oil come from? Factory?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like a rebuild if it's leaking.Need to purchase o ring kits for your pump. It's all in the
manual....the real manual by Mercury, not that comic book you have.
I'm currently doing the same job, though my problem is the tilt ram leaking...oh yeah and the
&/&/$/@/$-@& transom bracket that is rusted/cold welded on,preventing me from removing the unit.Hope you have better luck.

Re: 1987 Mercury 45hp tilt and trim question

Yeh I have been looking for a REAL manual for the last 3 months and have not been able to find one.

I guess I am confused on the leaking issue. Where the oil is located, is in the wiring harness. I would think the harness going into the tilt and trim motor would be "fluid free". Are you saying the pump is leaking into the trim motor? Sorry I am not to electrical minded but trying to learn this. And the "O" ring you are referring to is for the pump or the motor?

Is there a special tool needed to get to the screw in the rear by the transom bracket? My motor is bolted onto a manual jackplate. I am assuming I will need to loosen the motor fromthe jackplate to reach the rear screw?

Thanks for your reply.

Re: 1987 Mercury 45hp tilt and trim question

OK I got the trim motor off last night. Man that was interesting but not as bad as I thought it would be.

When I took it off I had about 1 qt of oil (fluid) drain out everywhere. Is this supposed to be filled with fluid?

Anyway I could not tell if there was a short in the wires or not and basically said forget it. I put it all back together, tried the trim button and the motor moved up and down faster than it ever has with no problems. I am not sure WHY and not sure how long it will last but without the knowledge of what I was looking at, I felt it best just to put it back together. :(

I did attempt to remove the entire system but the book said to hammer out the cross pin on the top and that thing would not budge. So I gave up on that theory.

Can anyone tell me if the trim motor is supposed to have fluid in it or not?

Thanks
