There is a red/white and a blue/white wire coming to the swithbox that seems to feed plugs 3 and 4.With the motor running, when I check for resistance I get a reading. There is a red and a blue wire coming to the switchbox that seems to feed plugs 1 and 2. When I check these I get no resistance reading. I know it is not the plugs or the plug wires. This test on the switchbox is as far as I have gotten. Truthfully I do not have a clue what I am doing. Is this something I can fix? Or am I better off paying someone to fix this. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You need a certain kind of test meter to check a switchbox. Most Merc dealers have those. Your option it to test everything else and see if any of those are the problem. The reds and blues are paired. There should be resistance between the reds (high speed widings), but not to ground or the blues. There should be resitance between the blues (low speed windings), but not to ground or the reds. All of the wires have to be disconnected from the switchbox for testing. But that's not your problem. Those wires make power for spark. If you have spark anywhere, the power is being made.

Your most likely problems are the trigger or the switchbox. You can test the trigger(s). I don't know the procedure off hand. Your public library may have a manual that would help. Or you can order one above. :)

All are connected at the top of the switchbox correct?

And you only have one switchbox correct?

If so switch the red/white and blue/white wires with the red and blue and re-test for spark..

They are all stator leads that provide voltage to the switchbox(s).... After you switch them if the no-spark condition stays at the same cylinders you have a bad switchbox... If the no-spark condition moves to the other 2 cylinders that previously had no spark you have a bad stator... Either on the low or high speed side, which means the whole thing needs replaced...

Willy may correct me if I'm wrong on this but it sound right... I have to admit I'm used to V-6's...

Let us know...

Yes there is only one switchbox, the red/white and blue/white wires are at the top. The red and blue wires are at the bottom. I am going to try swapping those wires tomorrow, and I will let you know. Appreciate the advice.

Ok, I swapped the stator leads. 1,3,and 4 had spark. So I swapped them back, and 1,3,and 4 still had spark. At idle speed 3 and 4 had roughly 8.5 ohms. 1 had roughly 19 ohms. While watching 2, twice it jumped to 30 ohms and immediately back to 0. I monitored 2 for about one minute. Honestly, before, I didn't test for spark with an ohm meter. I just touched the wires and felt for a shock. 1 and 2 didn't shock me, but 3 and 4 did. However today I tested with an ohm meter and this is what I found. The last outing with the boat it would be running fine and all of a sudden it wouldn't do but 10 miles an hour. Then it would pick back up. Finally, it dropped to 10 miles an hour and wouldn't pick back up. So whatever is going bad, seems to work at times. I keep hearing the word trigger. What does it do?

Sounds like the switchbox chris!

Heat has been known to cause a bad switchbox to suddenly cut out as you described...
