I recently got a 16'.4 1987 Bumble Bee Bass rig with a 1987 110 Johnson HP bubble back engine on it. Got the rig real cheap because it needs some work and the PO got in over his head and made a mess of things.
The boat had been sitting for a long time when he got it from the original owner so he flushed the fuel tank, new gas lines & filter, removed the carbs and took them to a dealer for rebuilds.
Then he made a huge mess out of the linkage by adjusting EVERYTHING way out of whack so bad that I can't make sense of it even with a manual because the manual assumes "small adjustments are being made."
Correcting the shift cable was no problem but I have no clue WHERE to start the timing and carb sync process since everything that he touched has been so drastically adjusted out of whack from the factory set-up.
I have found a pretty good picture of my exact year and model engine that shows the linkage set-up fairly well to the point that I can almost count the exposed the threads on MOST of the linkage ... so should I try to mimic that set-up for a starting point and use the manual from there and hope for the best or what do you folks suggest ???
The engine has good compression, 109, 108,109,108 and the pistons and cylinders look great from what I can see thru the plug holes .... and I've been told that these engine make good power but are very thirsty.
I have cranked this engine on a hose and ran it in neutral. It cranked pretty quick but never did idle down below 1300 r.p.m.'s on the tach after it warmed up and I didn't want to chance damaging anything by running it to long before getting everything syncronized correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
