Hello all,

New to this site, but I spent most of my weekend reading restoration threads for StarCraft Mariners and am greatly impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm of you guys!I Will be creating a thread in the StarCraft restoration page myself sometime tomorrow to chronicle my project, which I hope to complete before May 2016 (fingers crossed). A big part of meeting this deadline is making sure the outboard engine on this boat works. It belonged to my brother, whom we regrettably lost this summer. The whereabouts of the key to this boat is unknown. My thinking was to replace the ignition so I can at least test the Johnson 90 that it has and which was running the last I knew, and then later replace the throttle arm later in the project. However, when I removed these components from the console, I couldn't figure out how to open the casing up. Please see the pics I will post below. My questions here are, do I just use a flathead to pry this box apart? and secondly, is there a replacement for this complete control system out there somewhere, or should I be replacing the throttle arm and ignition/key separately and keep the casing? Thanks for any input you all may have.

Find the model number on the outboard, and you should be able to order a compatible entire unit (new or used) if you decide you don't want to try and rehab/fix the remote you have now.

I am thinking of replacing the whole unit with something newer. I'd really like to transform this into a nice looking, nice riding fishing vessel. I will look for model number on the engine tomorrow and see what I can find on the internet as far as replacements.

If all else fails, it's good to know I can at least get a replacement key made.

I'm attempting to charge one of the two batteries that were on the boat overnight and hopefully be able to lower the tilt and take the lid off the engine tomorrow as well. Pretty exciting stuff! Haha

Thanks guys!

Pretty sure if you remove the screw from the back side of the handle the unit will pop a part. Be careful some are like a jack in the box.

Thanks for the advice! After seeing the prices of some used units online, I decided to see if I cant get the ignition switch out after all. Why not? After removing that screw I was able to open the remote box with a little force. Took some photos of the wiring for record and found a good diagram of the ignition wiring online. May try to hotwire to see if outboard will fire up while I wait for new ignition switch to arrive. Will let all know when I begin my restoration thread later today including more pics of the craft. Again, thanks for the input all, very helpful so far! Sorry this photo doesn't show much, it was tough taking photos solo without unwiring and separating the box.
