I just bought a yamaha 115 2 stroke from 1987. It sat in a field unused for around 18 years. under the hood looks brand new except for the dirt diver nests. The fly wheel moves by hand. Besides rebuilding the carbs and water pump is there anything that should be changed? Things like 1. engine gaskets 2. thermostat 3. lower unit seals. 4. fuel pump? It has an oil injection box under the console should I eliminate it or use it? I am on a budget like everyone else. I am going to be using this engine in brackish water mainly and I've heard of problems with the shift rod corroding on these older models. I need some help from individuals experienced with unused older yamaha's. thanks john

Fog or oil the cylinders and then do a compression test on all four cylinders. Hopefully you will be over 100 psi and within 10% on all cylinders. If that comes out good check for spark on all four. If you have spark then clean the carbs and replace the impeller. Use some premixed gas and try to start it on the hose or in the water,(better too much oil than not enough). If everythng seems to be working right go to straight gas. Hopefully you have the full wiring harness and all the guages work. Then look for problems to creep up. Look to replace all the gas lines with new alcohol resistent ones about this time. I would keep the oil injection as long as it is working, premix if it acts up. If you do have all the gauges keep a close eye on them for a while and you will probably be able to catch anything before it becomes a real problem or damages your motor.

Thanks, the lines going to the oil injection are ok. I just don't know how to test it. How do you make sure your oil injection is working?
I just ordered water pump kit, fuel filter, plugs, carb rebuild kit, fuel pump and a thermostat. bill under $200 this should get me started

I would make sure the motor will run properly first. Then I would change out the fluid and wait to see if any other problem showed up.

Watch the lower unit seals closely. Dry rot on them could be disasterous to your budget.

While all rubber hoses may seem intact, they should be limber. Otherwise, you'll be chasing cracks and breaks until all the hoses are eventually replaced.

18 years is a long time for rubber to set dry. 18 years may be a long time for rubber parts period.

Finally, keep a close watch on your wiring to make sure the insulation doesn't start to crack off the copper wires. I chased brittle wires with liquid rubber till the motor got way old and not worth fixing anymore (I actually used it as an excuse to upgrade the motor.).
