1987 yamaha 115hp power trim unit

i could use some guidance removing the power trim/tilt unit.

i have a 1987 yamaha 115 hp.
salt water slip.

my outboard transom bracket sits pretty low and most of the power trim assembly is under water.

althought the unit still functions well,
corrosion and critters are starting to take their toll,
so i thought i would sand and paint before trouble starts.
(what a dope)

after much wresting with frozen bolts, i find no obvious method to swing the assembly free of the transom to access the opposite side

the bolts are free, but i will never be able to free the upper main piston pin.

will the trim assembly swing out to the aft, or do i need to remove the engine from the boat and access the trim unit from the transom side?

I suppose this is my fault for not buying the factory manual.
my 'aftermarket' manual addresses the trim/tilt removal as if it just happen by crossing your fingers and clicking your heels 3 times.

but searching all of the posts here has given me a few clues.
(yes, i could of done a better job in this category, as well)

apparantly, the stbd transom bracket needs to be moved out of the way before the trim/tilt assembly can be removed.


judging by the large number of lost souls that have the same problem.
i was wondering if those in-the-know would comment if this approach is mostly,
a yamaha 'feature',
a 1980s yamaha feature,
or common for outboards over 100hp?

Seems to be a feature of Yamaha through the current models.

thanks for the reply.
i've inherited this motor from someone with worse maintenance habits than my own (my father)

I guess i should not be too critical of yamaha, since its managed to last this long.

it will be nice when someone figures out a way not to soak $10,000 parts made out of aluminum in salt water

Trailers, lifts and dry storage are three ways to minimize it.
