greetings all.
I am not getting spark, checked the stator according to the manual which showed an open stator.. however, I am not sure what all the 6 wires are.. I have Blue and Blue/white , Shows open.. Red and Red/ white shows 106 ohm, (good according to the book). and two yellows which is obviously the charge CCT... does anyone know what the blues and reds are for? the blues look like it should be for the Capacitor Charge, and Reds? Don't know..
also does anyone have any check list to check the switch box? I am concerned that possibly the switch box, toasted the blues coil CCt.
Looking forward to your response.

Blue pair = low RPM ignition
Red pair = high RPM ignition
Yellow pair = charging

None should have continuity to ground. Pairs should have no continuity between pairs. Each pair should have continuity and those will vary. But you found your problem with no continuity on hte blue pair.

Switchboxes can't take out a stator and vice-versa is awfully rare. You need a red stator kit. The black ones from the late 80s to mid 90s crap-out on a regular basis and I'll venture to say that over 80% of all Mercs with a black stator of that vintage will experience a stator failure in their lifetime (unless something else destroys the motor first). How they get away without a forced recall is beyond me. The new red stators seem to be more reliable.

Re: 1988/100 HP Merc/searay, stator colors

Hi Thanks so much for clearifying that. the stator I have with an open (blue) section is a black one.. I am ready to order one (CDI part number 174-877801 which is suppose to be a direct replacement . The Catalogue for the Marine supplier shows a red unit but in bold letters says existing mercury red stator only and is not the OEM replacement.
What is a little confusing is that at the bottom of the info, it says use only with CDM Modules. and below it says,
NOtice: we recomment these stators be used with the CDM Module systems only. If the engine uses a standard switch box and has the red stator adapter installed, then remove the adapter and use the 174-877801 (this is the direct replacement for the OEM unit)..
Now i am totally confused.. does anyone know what is the best route to go? and what is a CDM Module compared to a switch box????
looking forward to replys..

I think you are looking for part
CDI # 174-8778K1 . This is a 9 amp stator.

-andy

Thanks.
to be on the safe side, I will go with the Black from "CDI" which is the part number given and not go for the Merc. OEM unit which costs one heck of a lot more. just in time to winterize it.
Thanks for your help.
