1988 115 Idle Stabilizer Removal

I repaired a corroded red/white wire at switch box at the beginning of the summer. Now I see from doing some research that the box isn't really needed and I don't think my motor needs it, so I'm planning to pull it out.

Question is, should I remove or leave the white/black wire that connects the two switch boxes? Anything else I should know about when pulling the stabilizer?

Thanks,

Greg

do not remove the wire connecting the sw.boxes. you can remove the idle stabilizer, but why?

The idle stabilizer is notorious for failing and in many cases has caused timing issues and destruction from detonation.

The wire between the ign switch boxes is the bias wire and as the OP said shouldn't be disconnected.

Far as removal goes, just disconnect the stabilizer wires and re-tighten any affected connections.

as others have said, "take it out and throw it away" I may be looking at a total rebuild on my 115hp 1984 i-6 due to this POS messing up my timing......consider yourself lucky it hasn't caused any problems yet.

You spoke of corroded wires. What the stabilizer does to wreck the engine is short the bias circuit to ground, which will advance the timing about 30 - 40 degrees.

Check the manual on your motor. IF this same module also has an "advance" feature, you may want to advance WOT timing a few degrees.

It's not critical, but it affects performance and efficiency a bit.

hope it helps

I'm sure glad you mentioned that. I checked and the Seloc manual shows the box I have (2 mounting screws with 3 wires), is an idle stabilizer only. So guess I'll be ok taking it out without advancing the timing at max rpms.

Thanks to all for the replies. I really appreciate the help. -Greg
