I have a Merc 115 OB with power trim/tilt that's having issues. About 5 years ago I had to replace the up and down solenoids and it worked ok, then it quit working altogether. Just last night, while cleaning and tuning up the engine, I noticed some SEVERE wear (down through the insulation to the copper strands) on the 3-wire cable that comes from the engine and goes to the hydraulic motor, it was rubbing against a plastic shroud that protects the control cables and power cables that come out of the transom going to the motor and looks as though it shorted on the POS battery cable (that ALSO wore through to bare copper) that came though the same protective shroud.
So, after believing that (5+ years ago) I had a bad hydro pump and didn't notice the short and worn wires, I didn't investigate further, didn't have $$ nor time to fit it completely, but continued to use the boat without the convenience of Power Trim & Tilt. I manually lowered and raised it when I launched by opening up the hydro fluid resevoir for the pump to release the pressure. On one particular day while launching, I LOST the cap that went to the resevoir, and now water has been introduced to the hydro fluid resevoir.
So to get to the point:
Can I lift off engine, replace wires to pump, replace fluid and fluid resevoir cap, and hope all goes well when I throw the switch and hope it works again? Or have I caused major damage to electric motor by allowing it to esentially run all the time by letting the power (POS from battery) run unchecked into the electric morot at the source of the short? I bought a used round-casing pump from e-bay, but I have the square-ish motor housing. Can I swap round for square-ish one?
Thanks again for anyone that can help, and please ignore my ignorance
