Was wondering If any one could tell me if the 150 merc is supposed to pump water when idling ? mine is over heating again. took out for a quick drive around the lake and the motor over heated. water is not pumping put new impeler in about 8 months ago worked fine all year. First outing this year and the presure gauge on dash is stuck and no water is coming out the hole on back of motor. I have a 1988 ranger 374v there is a presure gauge on dash I thought it was a oil presure but disconnected it and water came out does anyone know if this is a water presure gauge?

About 10 seconds running dry will take out the water pump impeller. If you don't know that there is no oil pressure in a 2 cycle engine, I would suspect you would also start the motor in the driveway just to see if it pops off, thus frying the water pump.

Best get at least the owner's manual for that motor and learn about it before you really hurt it. The 2.4 150 is one of the sturdiest motors Mercury ever made.

hope it helps
