Not true... I just checked and the carb kits are definitely still available... all of the ignition system components (stator, trigger, switchboxes, coils) are also still available from Merc...

I'm wondering if your mechanic might be fishing for a sale....

Hearing a lot of that lately... The season is comming and winter was harsh. Be wary.

Those engines are great. Good solid engine. Easy to work on. Lots of them around and any half descent outboard mech should be able to work on it... He!!, if you were closer to me, I ask you to bring it round. :D After the old in-line 6s those are my favourite engines.

If I was you, I'd be looking for a more 'knowledgeable' mechanic, or buy a service manual (Genuine, not clyner or seloc), spend a bit more time with us (never a bad thing :D) and get to know your engine intimately....

Your buy sounds great... Wish we could get bargains like that here :(

Agree with Chris 100%. Spend time here reading and getting to know about your motor. These guys are great and can teach you everything there is to know about that motor. I have the same motor and had a stabilization short out and burned up two cylinders. I rebuilt the engine myself thanks to this forum and the knowledge of the great people on it.

Don't let all the problems you read about scare you about your motor. The most important thing you'll learn is how to take care of that motor and it should last a long time.

If it still has the stabilization module on it you should consider taking it off and resetting the WOT timing 23 BTDC. Just do a search about it and read up.
