1988 200 Hp Johnson had no spark, changed power pack. Has spark runs great, but now won't shut off.

Unhooked black wire w/ yellow tracer that runs to power pack & grounded, shuts off.

Defective new power pack?

Thanks

grounding the blk/yel is supposed to kill the eng, your keyswitch is supposed to do that in off position,if its not happining when you turn to off, either you have an open in your harness somewhere or the keyswitch is defective, keyswitches go bad

Re: 1988 200 Hp Johnson ignition problems

The Black wire w/yellow tracer goes directly to the power pack, motor will not shut off when switch is off or pulling the safety lanyard, except by disconnecting at the power pack & manually grounding.

Got juice from the switch on the black/yellow wire all the way to the power pack, seems to me I've got a bad power pack.

Sorry,

since both are'nt working (stopping the engine, there must be a bad ground @ the switch?) I,ll check that

Thanks

I went ahead replaced the switch, sometimes it will shut off the engine, sometimes the RPMs drop a little. Ground @ the switch checked good.

Disconnected the black wire w/yellow tracer @ the power pack, & grounded it straight to the motor, then with a long jumper wire straight to the neg side of the battery.

Same thing,

sometime's it will shut right down, sometime;s the idle will drop, but stay running, sometime's it just keeps running & won't shut off.

Bad Power Pack?

Please Help!

The black/yellow wire is supposed to ground the power pack to shut the engine down. If you disconnected the black/yellow wire and jumped the terminal on the pack to ground and it did not kill the engine, I would think the power pack was defective.
