I have a 225hp Johnson (1988) and was wondering if the VRO Pump was rebuildable and if so, is it cost effective to rebuild. The prices I'm seeing are around $225 for a new pump.

That's cheaper than where I'm from. The rebuild kit for here was au$500 for the same motor. My friend ended up having his VRO diconnected, and just pre-mixs his fuel and oil.

VRO stands for "Very Risky Oilers"<br /><br />Even on good ones, I've always disconnected them and mixed the oil (50 / 1) in the gas.<br /><br />This way you never have to worry about a VRO going bad and trashing your engine. ;)

Oil pumps seldom go bad but they are always blamed for everything. Keep reading on this forum and youll find plenty of folks who blame this or that on "VRO" pumps on motors that dont even have a VRO pump. I use oil injection on all my engines and wouldnt have it any other way.

Re: 1988 225hp Johnny VRO Pump

My reason for asking about this is that my engine has 6 season on the rebuild (3 from me and 3 from previous owner). I wanted to "freshen it up" if that was possible. I yanked two Force 120hp engines off when the second one went. To me, premixing is a pain. With a 140 gallon tank, I empty it at the end of the year. Don't like leaving $300+ where I can't get to it. I also verify me VRO works BEFORE I leave the dock. If it smokes, it works. I'm not interested in disconnecting the VRO, so please don't suggest that. I just wanted to know if there is a rebuild kit for what I have.

best just to purchase a new one every 6 years or so. its also a good time to inspect the filter in the tank and the oil hose for problems. I personally have seen more premix failures than actual VRO oil related failures since the introduction of the VRO2 and the later 4 wire pumps. any 2 or three wire pumps I run across get an immediate replacement.<br /> its a mechanical device and is subject to wear, if you spread the cost over 6 years its actually cheap.

my point was that on my friends 225, it was not ecenomical to rebuild or replace the pump.

The latest pricing shows the pump at around $260. For more info on the "VRO" go to:<br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000028 <br /><br /><br />similar article with color photo:<br /><br /> http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html
