I have a force engine on my pontoon and the engine will not shut off with the key can anyone guide me to a place that may have Diagnostics procedures for this engine. The model number is Model: 357F8B and the serial is Serial: 1086 also can anyone tell me if this is a magneto system or a alternator system. The manual states self-limiting single phase alternator at 5 amps, this sounds more like a mag to me only 5 amps. I thank anyone in advance who maybe of assistance.
thank
Darell

I found a book at the library finally but it covers a wide range of stuff. Is there something more specific to my engine then every force ever made?

Re: 1988 35 hp force

I?ll try to get back soon if I can find info in my Clymer Manuel. I hope someone with direct experience will jump in soon to help you. The Public Library has the Clymer Manuals I needed.

Pointers:
1. I doubt this late of 35 HP will have a mag sys vs electronics (my 1970 35 HP Chrysler is Mag).
2. IMO you are dealing with an ignition switch problem but mine has been opposite of not starting.
3. It sounds like a short in the switch or etc. for the engine to have elect to run with the switch off.
4. Have you done any investigating of wires around the switch or add TV tuner spray to the switch?
5. How do you kill the engine? If wires are shorted/welded, this should interfere with starting.
6. Do you have any history of this motor with any other electrical problems or good observations??

I just purchased the boat. To shut it off the previous owner was choking the engine out. I have not yet been able to work on the boat I got it when I was at my cabin on a quick last minnute deal last Sunday as I was leaving. Can you tell me more info on this tv tuner spray and what to do with it?

The TV Tuner Spray helps to clean/lubricate dirty contacts, which was my ignition switch problem 10 yrs after replacing the original (due to tarp storage/condensation and etc IMO). I fell you have an opposite problem as shorted wires to not allow the switch to kill the motor. If this is the problem there should be some other possible indictors ?Experience Tech?s? can share info on. If it is not killing the motor IMO it is still drawing on the battery. Does it run the Batt down?

Will or has the previous owner shares any info as to what possibly led to this matter? This does not sound like a routine matter and I hope it?s not a possible dangerous or damaging matter. The PO should have key info needed in this puzzle.

1. IMO, some electrical work has occurred or an ignition switch has been replaced.
2. I can visualize the wrong switch was installed or the correct switch wired wrong.

The previous owner makes it sound as if this situation just began to occur on its own and he never had it fixed do to the little use he had for the boat. I got a steal on the pontoon $400 for motor/boat and actually was buying to with the intention on putting a bigger engine on and then decided to leave this at my dads cabin which is a very small lake, 35hp is plenty for this small fishing lake and I am looking for something bigger and nicer for the river I use. I will check the wiring when I get there tomorrow is there a way to identify if it is indeed the wrong switch.

Re: 1988 35 hp force

My direct experience has been with my ?Old 1970 35 Chrysler? and I would hate to mislead you. There are some standard wire colors and letter on the switch that should be matched with original switches. I have seen Frank give this info seems like many times but I c/n pull it up or spot it in my Clymer. Hopefully someone will share direct Pics or and diagrams to give you some info to work with.

?Old School?, tells me that you have direct power in the off position due to a short or wrong switch or wiring. ?Old School? also tell me that there should be a draw on the batt after you choke the Eng. to kill it.

Suggestion:
1. Pull-up a stock switch here at iBoat and see if they show switch letters and cable colors to connect (or search your model's switch letters and cable colors).
2. When you get to the boat, check for a low draw on the batt by lightly touching the neg cable to the batt post while looking for a small arc as a draw of power.

I?ll jump back in if I see where I can help!

A few more thoughts that might help in your investigation:

1. If you have a local Force Dealer, see if they will help ID a stock switch and what color wires goes where on the switch.
2. I finally found a link that might be related to your switch, at the bottom on the thread in the link below.
3. Somewhere I feel your wire colors will be identified, I hope they will relate with the colors to the switch.

Good Luck!
