I just got this motor a few weeks ago, and finally got the ignition switch in today. I hooked it up to muffs and tried to start it, and it keeps blowing the fuse at the solenoid. It has no accessories hooked to it (tach, vro alarm, etc). I dont understand what could be causing it to blow. Any help would be appreciated!

I checked the voltage coming out of the solenoid, and it is at 27A. Please help!!

Im not knowledgeable about boat motor circits in general but I am a industrial electrician by trade.

If your competent with a meter you can check the cir /sol coil with a voltage meter to ground. I doubt you have an "overload " condition. You are more out to have voltage going to ground.

1. - I would start by isolating the power. Power the switch ( no other wires on acc side) Connect the sol start wire to the switch without the sol in the circit.

2 If their is no ground or the fuse stays lit the return wire to the sol is good if a grounds is present or the fuse blows you have isolated the problem

3. If the fuse stays an no ground then add the sol to the circit without the stater wire so you can elli, inate the secondary side of the coil also

4. If a ground is present or fuse blows then you have isolated your problem.

5. If all this test is good then yo can add your acc side abd start elliminating them as well.

Confused,,,How did you check voltage coming out of the sol ? and how did you check voltage and measure amperage ?

do you mean you checked the voltage of the "switched or seconday" side of the starter sol ?

You have the primary side (coil) that could be grounded.

you have the seconday or switched side that carries the starter load that could be grounded or is taking a over amperage load from a faulty starter.

The starter and sexondary would show a problem from your main source the battery,

The primary side (start) of the sol is going to show a problem in the switch or power side to the controls,

I checked the wire that the fuse is connected to......it is at 27A. The fuse is a 20A.

Like I said isolate the power to the "switched" wire that goes to the sol start termnal. Measure it for voltage and amps of you like without a load.

I had the same problem, dont know if your ign switch is the same but i had black and yellow wire, on the wrong m prong on the switch, moved it to the raised m and it stopped, also i coated ign with liquid elec, it could be arc across and causing a problem, my screws were very close together,
