I have a 1988 OMC 5.7 in a 1988 Seaswirl. I want to install a high torque starter vice the GM starter because of weight and access. I have not had much experience with these type of starters and was looking for some comments, starter options from people who have used them in the past. I have discussed with friends in the past and they believe staying with the OEM is the way to go. I would like to agree, but weight and access are steering me away from the OEM idea.

Ayuh,.... If ya mean the little permanent magnet starters, ya sure, that's all I use now-a-days,....

Marine rated units of course,....

Electric motor technology has advanced alota in the last several years,....

Bondo, thanks. I have looked on line since reading your email. Any suggestions, like manufacturer, model etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah , post up some links .

I upgraded my Bronco ( 302 ) from a standard style starter to a newer PMGR and it cranks so much better and easier starts .

would love to do the same for the boat.

Thanks

Ayuh,...... Is yer starter the straight across bolt pattern, or the staggered bolt pattern,..??

If a straight pattern starter, Our hosts here, iboats lists two, A, B,....

If a staggered pattern starter, I find three in a quick look,... 1, 2, 3,....

Somebody's gotta pay the rent here,..... ;)

Did someone delete my post?

No.

The important thing is MARINE use.

Contact ARCO Starter, Alternator.

They should be able to lead you in the right direction.

Let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks Bondo. I believe I can use either straight or staggered.

Ayuh,..... The block will be drilled, 'n tapped for one or the other, or both,....

The starter pattern is determined by the diameter flywheel used,....
The 14" flywheel uses the staggered pattern starter,.....
'n the 12" flywheel uses the straight patterned starter,....

My flywheel is a 14" and the block has three holes. The OEM starter I removed was straight. Thanks for all your help!!

Ayuh,.... If ya have the 14" flywheel, you did Not have a straight patterned starter,....

Or, if ya removed a straight pattern starter, ya Don't have a 14" flywheel,....
