1988 60hp lower unit compatibility?

I checked the lower unit crossover chart in the top secret file, however it does not answer my question. I have an '88 evinrude 60hp, E60TLCCR, that needs a new lower unit. I found a clean '76 70hp johnson lower unit for real cheap, however the shift rod pulls in the opposite direction of the one for my '88. Can the cables on the controls be reversed to make this lower unit usable? Also, is there any other reason I wouldn't be able to use this lower unit? Other than the paint color of course Thanks in advance!
