My 1988 70hp will run all day with no problem. Then when i try to start it later it seems like the battery is dead. Multimeter says all is good, starter is hot, everything else is fine. The next day it will start with no problem. Took starter to shop and it was fine.Could it be selinoid? Wont go back out till I can depend on motor.Dead on the water is a BAD feeling

Re: 1988 70hp starter problem

Intermittent electrical problems can be the most difficult to track down. Cold, everything 'seems' to check out OK.

Start checking voltage drop while cranking the motor.

Pull the lanyard safety switch so the motor won't start.

Check voltage at the battery while cranking.

Again at the positive cable connection to the starter relay.

Again on the starter side of the relay.

Lastly, on the starter itself.

A remote starter button attached to the relay is handy, and only crank for a few seconds, just long enough to get a stable voltage reading.

If there is a poor connection you should see a drop iin voltage at on point in the path.

There is always the possibility that the starter bushings are dry, tightening up and dragging while heated from operating the engine, yet appears to turn fine when cold.

Re: 1988 70hp starter problem

It's more likely that the bushings (brass) on one end is worn enough that the armature 'leans' off to one side just enough to allow it to drag.

Depending on the model, a replacement bushing may still be available.

if it is beyond your capability to repair it then price a new starter and compare that to taking it to your local auto electric repair shop, they should be able to go thru it. Call and get an estimate, compare that to a new starter plus freight.
