1988 70hp yamaha trim motor

my trim locks up, just clicks, up or down, when i tap on the motor it works again,. is this something i can repair, or do i need to buy a new motor. this motor has set up for a long time. thanks guys

brushes not making good contact might be the problem.
take it apart and see what you find
how rusty is the motor housing

housing looks good on the outside.i have never been able to put one back together once i take it apart

why?
brushes get in the way?
then buy a new aftermarket one, make sure you paint it well before installing if you are around saltwater
