Any info would be helpful. I have disconnected the cable at the engine and even removed the lower unit to find the bind up. It's almost impossible to shift and I think something may be going on in the gear case. When I do get it to whichever gear I want it runs along great, but it requires WAY to much force to shift.

How did the Lower Unit shift when you had it removed, if you tried? Did you try to shift with the boat controls with the LU removed to ensure the cable was not binding?

The lower shifts hard even when removed. I tried the cables withe the lower off and they work easy. I just don't know where I should be looking in the gear case for a problem or if there is a common defect with this particular model Merc.

The LU is not easy to shift any time when it is removed as you have to use pliers. Does it get into all three positions:

Forward: Prop will turn (ratchet) CW but not CCW
Neutral: Prop will turn freely in either direction
Reverse: Prop will not turn in either direction except for a few degrees of gear mesh.

If you still feel it is too hard to shift, you can remove the bearing carrier and see if the shift rod rotates freely, then check the balls, spring and cam follower setup for freedom.

What is the s/n of your engine and I'll get you the parts list if you don't have it.
