Hi
I have a 88 force motor and wanted to rebuild the starter. It isnt engaging and from what I read on this site it is prob he brushes or spring. So I need to now what starter is on the 85hp force motor. I bought the Acro rebuild kit from this site and the parts are not the same and it will not work to my knowledge. Any help will be great thanks

can you post your model or serial number. There are a bunch of 85HP models for that year. I am guessing you need the brush kit. Do you know if you need the commutator. Looks like the brush kit is about 20 bucks and the commutator is about 50/

Whow, foster. Let's make sure first. That's a 150buk part.
When you say it isn''t engaging, do you mean it spins, but does not engage the flywheel?
If so, all you need to do is get some WD40, and use it to clean the bendix (the little worm-shaft and gear on top the starter). Outboards of all makes and manufacturer, do this quite often.. .There are other troubleshooting steps, but I gotta run....duty calls. I'll be back this eavenin. 73

Hi

I had used to have a 1988 85 horse Force motor. The brushes were worn, so I got a brush kit. The brush holders were made of plastic on the old starter. They were brittle and broke. I couldn't find the part anywhere. What I did do is take the numbers to an auto parts store and got a new starter for about $110.00. I wished I did that in the first place.

I am working on getting the model number. The boat is at my moms house cause I dont have rom at mine. i tried the wd40 deal before i did anything else and it didnt help. The starter turn but it doesnt jump and and catch the flywheel. Thats the best way for me to describe it or like said engage it. For a few weeks it would sometimes engage then all of a sudden it doesnt engage at all.

That's a good description, and I now know the problem is the bendix...Provided that the starter is turning at a normal RPM, and not very slow, or the teeth of the flywheel gears or bendix gears are all intact, and not ground-off (rare).
The bendix is the assembly that moves-up to engage the gears of the flywheel. This assembly is not moving-up as it was designed to do, when the starter motor runs. If the motor is defective, and turns very sslowly, this assembly wont do diddly. It uses centrifugal force to function....Not enough, and it sits and spins.
The bendix is actually three or four parts in one assembly.
The Shaft (the drive shaft of the starter motor. This shaft has grooves in the form of two spirals, along it's length.
The cog, or cogs (these ride those spiral troughs in the shaft. Sometimes, they are an actual tab on the gear itself, and these may be broken, not allowing the gear to ride-up the shaft.
The Gear.
The spring( this is the optional piece...Most outboard motors do not need them, as the spring is there to disengage the bendix, or bring it back to a rest position. Since the shaft is vertical, gravity usually serves this function.

I still think the problem is in this bendix, and not the starter motor itself. Can you move the bendix assembly up the shaft by turning it,and pulling upward? If not, it has siezed-up on the motor's shaft, and will need to be actually cleaned using WD40 as a cleaning agent...Use the entire can if need be. Grease or oil will not work for this. amnd this problem is not just a common one..On most outboards ever made, it is to be expected at some point, that this bedix assembly is going to do this. It can be attributed to the environment they opertate in.
If you can turn the bendix, but it does not ride-up the shaft, the bendix is defective, and will have to be replaced. In most cases, you may opt to replace the entire starter, if this is the case (cogs sheared off, or the grooves in the shaft are wallowed-out).

However, if you can freely move this bendix,it rides-up the shaft effortlessly, and it is spotlessly cleaned using WD40 or other penetrating oil (Pblaster, Liquid Wrench, ect), then the motor will have to be pulled and rebuilt (or replaced)...Ither way, it's ka-ching $$ time.

Johnson/Evinrude brushes and plastic brush holder will fit some of the Chrysler/Force starters. Easy method to reinstall brushes is to cut slot in flat piece of thin metal (putty knife) the same size as armature shaft, hold brushes down, insert armature, remove putty knife.
