I bought this motor used several seasons ago and decided to check the condition of it's thermostat and found it didn't have one installed. After waiting several weeks for it's replacement to be shipped I remain somewhat uncertain as to which direction it should be installed. The Seloc manual shows one picture with the thermostat pointing one direction. Yet, in all of the diagrams the thermostat is facing the opposite direction. The diagrams also show an additional spring used to keep the thermostat pushed up against the head. However, I cannot find any mention of whether or not this spring is required for my model and year motor. Would someone please inform me as to where I may be able to obtain information regarding the thermostat assembly for my year and model motor. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Your motor should not require the separate spring.

You should have a gasket, part number 81 in the picture below.
Thermostat, part number 80. It is a 143* thermostat.
Rubber grommet, part number 79.
Thermostat cover, part number 78.

The pointed end of the thermostat goes into the engine, the spring side faces out.

You can get all the parts from a Mercury dealer, but you can probably save $15 if you buy the thermostat from a NAPA auto parts store. NAPA thermostat part number 18-3553 in their marine parts catalog.

Let us know how you make out.
