1988 88hp Johnson losing rpms at WOT

Recently changed spark plugs on my boat motor and noticed i could not get the motor to 5500 rpms. I no longer have the old spark plugs and I was very careful when I gapped them according to service manual specs. Any suggestions?

Sometimes when spark plug wires are disturbed, (moved) they may come in contact with ground, causing a loss of spark. Esp the two lower wires which often go to ground on the lower cowling latches when the cowling is reinstalled. Check the spark plug wire routing to make sure they aren't grounding out.

start with the basics, of trouble shooting, compression and spark test, with adjustable tester.
