OK, here is my original post back in October 2012:

http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/1988-88spl-sputters-dies-wot-582559.html

I ordered 2 SIERRA carb rebuild kits and looking through my manual it suggests "special" tools for completing the task of rebuilding my carbs:

317002 OMC Orifice Driver
324891 OMC Gauge (I believe this is a float gauge as included in the rebuild kit)
OMC Locquic Primer
OMC Screw Lock

My question is do I have to have to have these tools mentioned in the manual or can the experts offer other suggestions as to alternate tools, cleaner and adhesives that will work just as well?

Thanks

The orifice or jet screw driver is the big item. Go to the top secret files at the at the begining of this forum and you will find out how to make one.

Excellent, thank you. Any input about the OMC Locquic Primer or the OMC Screw Lock?

You can go to any parts house and buy those products under the Loc-Tite brand name.

Best thing you could purchase would be a repair manual for your family of engines. They'll have carb. cleaning pictures and instructions.

Outboard 2 stroke carbs are very, very simple, and they're most often just cleaned out with a can of carb cleaner. If you're careful, you can even re-use the gaskets. In other words, a carb kit is not needed most often.

The main thing is to tighten down any adjusting screws, and not how many quarter turns you made until they bottomed out. Then, return the adjusting screws to the same place after the rebuild. After you get the engine running, your final carb adjustments are simple.

Last time I pulled the two carbs. on my 115 hp Yamaha, I had them cleaned and reinstalled in about 1 hr. It's just not that hard of a job. And, I'm certainly not an accomplished boat mechanic by any means.

Got the Evinrude manual, it is very helpful and my go to for most questions I have.

I just need to make or find the jet tool.
