I am looking at buying a boat that has a 90hp Johnson. The boat is a fair ways away from me, so I have not gone to look at it yet.
The owner says that the engine has been overheated. It still runs, but he would not reccomend fixing it becuase he thinks that other parts in it could have been damaged.
Is there a common overheating problem with these engines? I belive the river that he used the boat in was a fairly muddy river.
What could be damaged from overheating? If it still runs, can it be damaged that much?

Thanks

If the owner admits to overheating, value the motor at $0 and yes, the damage could be substantial ... couldn't know until a compression test is done and perhaps cylinder inspection as well.

It depends, most overheating problems are a number of small problems and if solved then you have an engine thats good to go. However!!

IF! your a handy person then with a little time and a bit more money you could do it yourself.

start with the impeller, then move up to the waterjackets, water deflectors, down to the hoses into the thermostats and out through the pee hole.

if there is no compression or low compression in a cylinder then your looking at removing the powerhead and depending if the cylinder if scored having to hone it, but no to low compression usually means a piston is leaking, cracked or worn. and the powerhead would have to come off regardless as you have to get that piston out. and that takes time and money depending on replacing gaskets ect ect.

saying an engine is worth $0 is a little harsh as its worth something if your willing to do the job.

What job??? Compression test will tell a lot. If down in one or more cylinders, could be a blown head gasket, warped head or a lot worse. Down in a cylinder to me would mean motor value at sale is zero, unless someone is willing to spend a lot more time/money to determine why. No sense buying someone else's trouble! BTW, he hasn't bought yet.

If its a HULL you want,AND the PRICE is a deal for you.Go for it.Should the 22 year old engine be of any use for you ,its a plus.Reality is,the motor likely isnt worth any money you throw at it.The lowerunit might bring you a few hundred on ebay.
