So I recently pulled and split my 1988 alpha 1 gen 1 drive to diagnose leaking gear oil and failed pressure test. Turns out the shift shaft seal on the lower is leaking, parts are on the way. The upper passed pressure test and held 15psi for 24 hrs, but while looking it over I noticed the oil seals that the lower drive shaft feeds into have torn rubber. Some other forums have mixed statements on whether these seals need to be replaced or not. There is also mixed info on how to replace. I believe that manual shows replacement with gears disassembled, but some people state the seals can be picked out from below. Does anyone have experience changing these?
I have parts 13 and 14 from diagram attached on order, do they install in each other? It is hard to tell install orientation when comparing diagram and the pic I took. Hopefully I have the right parts on order and can install from below where pic is taken from. Don't think I want to pull gears on my own.
