is it possible to add the gear lube reservoir to a '88 searay with alpha 1's. This boat is moored all summer and i'm thinking this would give me a little more "piece of mind". Also, any information on where to purchase these would be helpful. thank you

Ayuh,... There used to be kits, from somebody, that replaced the vent plug with a fitting, 'n tube run through the transom...

If the drive is serviced, 'n splashed, it should be Fine throughout the season...
But if Problems are found, they have to be fixed...

Re: 1988 alpha 1 remote gearlube reservoir

Thank you. Just one more question. This kit, I assume, will require that a hole be drilled through transom correct? I am not familiar with the gen 2's, but am guessing that the the line from the bottle to the gearcase runs through the gimbal housing on a gen 2??? The main reason I though of this is that on my previous boat (255 searay amberjack with "double trouble"....omc stringer drives) I got fishing line wrapped around prop seal, lost ALL oil and thoroughly trashed a lower unit. I guess these gearlube reservoirs are somrthing to think about...although i really dont like the idea of drilling holes in my transom.

thank you for all your help!! much appreciated.

The hole in the transom is well above the transom shield, and item 16 in that link is the water proof cover that the hose goes through.

Ayuh,.... 'n the odds are, even with a remote oil bottle, the same thing would happen...

Re: 1988 alpha 1 remote gearlube reservoir

Ive had a remote bottle since 1978 prior to which I did ruin a drive due to oil loss. Since then, I have never lost a single component of a drive due to drive lube issues. This would be around 12000 hours of boating with both Volvo and Merc drives. Fishing line takes out seal- if you watch your drive bottle like you should, youll see the oil going down. Water in boot, youll see level go up and oil colour change.Lots of leeway to get home and investigate further.MHO-install the drive lube bottle.
