I bought this boat from my brother in law. It has an inline 3.0 litre 4 cylinder with an OMC sterndrive. We did a lot of cleaning as it had not been used for three years. I should have taken "before" pictures. I installed new gauges, stereo system, bimini top. The sole is soft in a few places so I might have some serious work to do. The boat doesn't leak a drop, or at least it didn't until some idiot ran into a sandbar. What kind of damage did the idiot do to the boat?

Welcome to iboats!

From your picture, I'd say the "idiot" appears to have peeled most of the registration number off.:D

All kidding aside, is the boat actually leaking? Can you tell from what general area? How hard was the hit on the sandbar?

Re: 1988 Bayliner 1950

It is leaking just under the drive as it goes through the transom. We went out to a lake to check it as opposed to the river. Of course the bilge wasn't working either.

I unscrewed the fuse block so I could work on it easier and shined up all the fuse contacts, and put a thin film of dielectric grease on the fuse ends (side) and reinstalled the fuse block. Bilge now works.

I also found two bolts near the leak ( I could only feel them) that seemed to be loose. I tightened them best as I could (very hard to reach ). That seems to have slowed the leak down to a dribble.

Went back to the river (not anywhere near that sandbar) again for about 4 hours. Ran bilge for about 30 seconds back at dock and cleared the bilge. Removed drain plug once boat was back on trailer and not much came out.

Not sure if i should take it back in the water until it's fixed?

Thanks for the help.

I actually found three bolts that were loose (see pic). I was able to snug them up a little more.

The idiot photo shopped the registration numbers off just like he does license plate numbers in photos.:D

Looks beautiful.
Changing the floor and possibly stringers is going to suck, but then you will have a boat to last you 30 years.

You really shouldn't put the boat in the water until the leak is completely fixed. If water is entering the bilge through the transom, it's also soaking the wood core of the transom, which is a bad thing.
