I need to replace my fuel sending unit on my 1988 chaparral 178 xl. I have no idea what to do and where I can even get to the gas tank. Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated. Also, links to new sending units that you would recommend.

You should have a removable inspection pie in the cockpit sole (floor) that allows you to access the sender and the pickup. Once you remove it, with the ign key in the run position (motor not running), take the ground wire and touch it to the wire on the center stud (should be pink). Your fuel gauge should peg to beyond full, this tells you your gauge is getting a reading.

The best senders, in my opinion, are WEMA reed switch senders. A bit pricey, but worth the money...http://www.wemausa.com/tank_sensors/tank_level_sensors.htm#Fuel_Water_Tank_Sensors

If needed, there are gauge/sending unit kits available for about $60.00. They are adjustable to fit almost any tank that has a gauge already.

Ok. the main problem with my set up right now is that I can't get an accurate reading on the fuel level because the needle is constantly moving back and forth. Can this be fixed?
