I'm new to the site and to the cruiser boating world. I've only had a small fish and ski in the past and have now jumped into the world cabin cruisers!

Questions, just to get things going:

A) What is the best online resource for old Chris Craft parts?
B) ". " manuals?
C) what should I watch out for on this boat?

Notes about the boat just bought:

I had a complete and VERY thorough survey performed and I was present during.

Unable to do sea trial due to boat being too far from ramp and permits being needed to take it on the road etc. ( I showed up at last minute. I live over ten hours from where the boat is located but due to the recent blizzard associated with hurricane Sandy I had to go help out my parents which put me just six hours away from the boat so I went on down to meet the Captain for the survey)

Mechanicals all checked out just fine. There was one soft spot and moisture indicated in top deck on starboard bow. This is being repaired by the seller (Norfolk Marine Co., Norfolk, VA). There was also a little separation of fiberglass (tavvits?) where the decking in the cabin meets the hull in a couple of areas and theses areas are being repaired as well wherever they are accessible.

I am having the entire boat detailed, buffed out, polished etc and re-striped with vinyl stripe of new color going over the original black gel coat stripe along the top sides.

I will be leaving the boat stored in Norfolk to have these items taken care of ( as condition of the sale) until March when I will have the boat shipped to the Cincinnati area where it will reside on the Ohio River where I will tinker and enjoy it until relocating myself and the boat (and the wife) to the Sarasota, FL area in about 4-5 years. The boat is just part of a five year plan ( Escape Plan ) which may become the name of the vessel.

Whew! Ok, any hot tips anyone?

Forgot to mention that it is a 284 with two 5.0 OMC engines. No generator. Water heater and a/c is there. Interior recently re done. Engines have only about 50 hours since rebuild. Boat total hours are around 850. The out drives are OMC as well with new boots. Engines tuned up last fall. Lots of recent work done on boat and then old owner traded in on smaller center console boat.

Welcome to the iboats.com forum! The members here are great and the experts, which I am not, can help you with any question about your boat. Your plan sounds super and, hopefully, someone is "winterizing" your boat during the storage period. Post I/O-specific questions in the OMC I/O & engine forum. Nice boat. Good luck and keep us updated on your plan!

Welcome to IBOATS.

As you are probably aware OMC as far as outdrives go has been out of business for several years and though with Cobra drives you should not have issues getting most replacement parts, some areas of the country have limited skilled techs that can properly help with issues that you may not want to tackle yourself.

So it might be good to start a discovery process for the locations the boat will be going to on what the OMC service situation is.

Thanks Mark. I will do just that, and I was NOT aware that OMC was out of business! That's good info.

I can't believe the surveyor didn't caution you about the OMC outdrives!?

... wonder what else he/she missed?

Don't think he missed too much if anything at all. He took almost six hours to complete the survey. He writes for about 8 different boating magazines/sites, mostly how to clinics etc. he may have assumed I knew the status of he out drive manufacturer. I have not yet received the full, hard copy of the report yet, just what we spoke bout on site. I was also bouncing back and forth between him and the dealers mechanic asking tons of questions.

He took almost six hours to complete the survey.

Was the 6 hours just the hull survey or did he, or someone else, do a mechanical survey of the 2 engines? If he caught those small little moisture issues then that seems like he did quite a good job.

My 270 Sea Ray is slightly shorter than yours and my hull surveyor took about 2 hours while in the slip then another 30 minutes during the haul-out for his inspection. I have only the 1 big block engine which that guy took another 2 hours or so doing the engine/drive survey.

That's a great looking boat. When you get more pictures of the cockpit and cabin, post them up.

Re: 1988 Chris Craft Amerosport - Just purchased..questions!!!

I'll post more pics in a few minutes. I'm pretty happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to tinkering with things like the dash and throttle controls, etc.
the boat was out of the water and already winterized so we had to do everything on he lot. (Yes, no sea trial) I'm confident that it will be ok though. We had to connect hose/muffs to check each engine one at a time. I want mixing he Capt. But he took a lot of time on every pact o he boat. The store guys were joking about it at h end of the day as hey were closed and ready to let heir lot dog loose and he was still checking away. They said he'd been there once before and it was the same story which is fine with me. I'm paying him to be thorough..

The surveyor is hired to assess the condition of the boat. While a comment may be included regarding the brand/desireability of a given drive package, the surveyor is not obligated to state anything about whether or not a given manufacturer is in business or not.

The OMC Cobra was/is a good design with a proven track record over the past 26 years. The only issues with them, is service and parts availability. There are fewer and fewer shops that will work on them and there are some parts that are harder to get new. At this point if you have major issues with the outdrive, it is possible to convert to an SEI drive with their conversion kit.

Globe,

this is my second attempt at posting due to user error

Sweet boat. I am actually looking to purchase the exact same boat. However, your interior is much nicer than the one I am looking at. I wanted to ask a few questions. Where did you find the fellow to inspect your boat and how much did it cost? Do you know what company did the interior of your boat?

thanks,
Jake

Jake,
I just goofed and deleted my entire reply to you too! Anyway, found the surveyor online. Read reviews and got a good feeling after some correspondence. I very happy with his work and report.
I have no idea who did the interior as it was done by last owner. I could ask the broker if they know, but it would be in the Norfolk, Virginia area.
Where is the boat you're looking at located? Not in Port Clinton, Ohio is it?
