I have a 1988 85 that i have noticed when it is shutoff there seems to be a light film coming from the motor on the water. I detect no gas leaks nor smell any gas fumes. Is this just normal exhaust residue on the water. Thanks

a torn fuel pump diaphragm can produce this... do you see the film while the motor is running or only when you shut it down?

Re: 1988 dt85 leaving a light film on water

I only noticed it when the engine was off but I didn't really pay much attention while it was running while on the water. The engine always starts right up and runs ok. i would think if it was leaking from the fuel pump it would hesitate at least a little or die when i first start it up. I've run it quite a bit with the cowling off and have not noticed anything unusual or drips while it was running or even after it was shut off. It does have a miss when I get to about 4000 rpms but I haven't cleaned the carbs since last summer and it sat all winter so I am leaning to a carb problem there. Thanks for your reply.

Could be that you're running too rich.

Thanks all for your replies. While I was cleaning the carbs I discovered my oil line slipped down just a bit on the barb and has a slight leak that was so minor it went undetected but was enough that it would build up overtime on the bottom and drip slowly out into the water. Thanks, again.

I found that my jet on the lower carb was only out about 1 turn. The carbs looked pretty good so I am leaning that's where my miss came from. has anyone had problems with the jets turning themselves while running? The spring feels tight and the jet wasn't free. Thanks.

Re: 1988 dt85 leaving a light film on water

I have one more question. I have a fast/low setting on my unit just below the cowling on the front. I have a manual but haven't checked this out yet. What does this actually do and how do you know where the setting should be?

Thanks

Waffles...

That Fast/Slow switch is a setting that will increase or decrease your idle speed. I'm pretty sure it also changes the richness of the fuel/oil mix but on that part I'm not too sure.

I found this out by changing the setting to get mine to idle so I could do more troubleshooting.
