I picked up a 88 Pantera as a new project boat with a 88 Evinrude 150 XP. It has been sitting for a little less than 2 years. I put new gas in it and changed the lower end oil. The oil was dark but no water in it. I took it to the lake and it started right up but when I shifted into reverse nothing. We went ahead and took the boat on the small lake and it ran great in forward. I was assuming it was something to do with the cable. We were fishing a little and went to take off and when I shifted into forward it had a small grind and felt like it kicked it back out of gear or didn’t allow it to get into gear. Then it wouldn’t shift into reverse or forward. I quickly checked the cable when we got back to storage. It seemed like it was moving correctly. I’ve never owned an Evinrude before only mercury. Do you suspect I need to have the lower unit rebuilt or is there something else I can check?

Step # 1 is to drain the gear oil.------If gears are stripped it will be expensive.
