1st time poster, just boat a pontoon boat that has 1988 Evinrude 70hp motor. The motor 1st time of the day starts up just fine (idles a little rough), but runs very smooth at top rpm. The problem occurs after shutting down the motor. Yesterday we got to our fishing spot and shut down the motor and approx 30 mins later tried to restart and the engine does not fire. The engine has brand new spark plugs which are all sparking. Luckily we have a 2nd 10hp motor that got us back to dock. Upon returning to dock we removed a spark plug to examine it (all was fine) put it back in engine fired back up. This same process happened 2-3 times yesterday (except we didn't remove the spark plug everytime, we just let it sit). Is this the choke sticking open and flooding the engine?? I have ordered the manual for the motor but have not yet received it, thought I start by asking here. Thanks for any help.

motor has primer not choke, so no. could be float needle sticking an flooding. but it would continue to flood it.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 70hp Restarting problems

Well my dad had the boat out this morning fishing and stopped and restarted the motor 3 times over a 3 hour interval. It's just bugging me what this could be, because I know with my luck that as soon as I take my wife and son out I'm going to have problems and would like to have some knowledge of what is going on. What is the proper starting procedure for this engine (Cold and warm)?

I have a 1988 - 175HP Rude and mine done the same thing for some time. I recently rebuilt all 3 carbs and performed a link & sync, and those symptoms went away. Now fires off over and over by just bumping the key. Before the work, it would act just as yours did. Started easier cold than warm. Not sure which repair corrected the problem, but it went away. My timing was off when I performed the sync. It may have been a combo of the two.

I have that same engine. Very cantankerous now due to ethanol. Some days wokrs like a charm; others stubborn on restart.

my 2004 Johnson 90 does the same thing. Mine seems to do it worse in the summer when it gets hot out. I was told it could be that the gas is boiling in the bowls ? I am going nuts because i have paid out the butt to have it water tested by my mechanic and it wont do it for him! It runs great when cold, but dies when i give it gas !

Re: 1988 Evinrude 70hp Restarting problems

Wife and I went down last night to take toon out for a ride and of course engine wouldn't fire. When we 1st got there I squeezed the gas bulb till it got tight then turned the key and held it up for 8 seconds then released and tried to start with no success. Tried this for a couple of minutes. Went back to the motor and took the cover off and held the throttle open while my wife turned the key and it fired right up. Turned it off put cover back on and it once again fired right back up, had no further problems the rest of the night. Runs great once it is started. So is this a problem with the throttle since it worked by holding it open to get it started??
