Can someone please advise if a 1988 Force 50 model 507F8D needs a 20 pole Tachometer? I can't find a definitive answer. What I think is the original is not working and needle is stuck. It seems a replacement might be hard to source but first need to know what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance

Yes a 20 is needed.
They aren't that hard to find.
Teleflex and Faria (I think) both sell them.

When I re-did my instrument panel a few years ago, I was not able to locate a new 20-pole tachometer. I had to buy one on eBay.

Many thanks guys. The info from Faria I checked seemed not so clear about the year and model number for what is a 20 pole engine. Did your recommendation come from experience or from documentation?

I know I'm being pedantic but can it seems not all Force engines were 20 pole. I found the following references to 20 pole engines.

Chrysler 55, 60 hp 1968-1983
Force 85 & 125 hp (all through 1989)
Force 90 & 120 hp (all to 1991)
150 hp (all to 1991 revision B)
L Drive 85 & 125 hp (1989 models)
L Drive 90 & 120 hp (all through 1991 Revision B)

I can't see my engine in there?? Are you sure this is a 20 pole engine? I can see from your signatures that yours are and thanks for the purchase links but I'd like to bew sure it's a 20 pole tacho I need.

I also found this which confuses me further. Mine is a 1988 50 D Model. Surely if a 1987 A / B model were 8 pole a 1988 would be? Why would theyt go back to an older setup? Also is the stator on the 35 HP the same as 1986 up is 12 pole?

Force
1984-1999
Some older Force engines are 20 pole (see note f.)
50 HP through early 1987 (A,B modds)
8
35 HP (1986 & later) 40 HP (1991 & later) 50 HP (1992 B models & later) 70 HP (1991 & later) 90 - 120 HP L-Drive (1991 B & later) 145 HP L-Drive (1991 & later)

Yep. It uses the exact same stator as the 85 and 125 HP motors.

Wow, thats the detail I was looking for! :) OK, 20 pole it is! Original Tacho is a Medallion model with a stuck needle. Looks like a new one delivered from USA will be up to $150 landed or can look at getting mine repaired. Many thanks.
