1988 force 50 making loud noise

hey everyone,
thanx for taking the time to read this post.

I have a 1988 force 50hp outboard, i was running it when it started feeling rough so i turned in and within 5 minutes it shut down.

i tried restarting it in the water as im drifting away but all it made was a load noise, not a cranking noise more of a scream when the starter would engage.

the prop is not frozen moves freely in N.
cannot do a compression test b-cause it will not crank at all.

I'm not great at figuring out the problem but i can fix it once i know whats wrong.

recently before this happened " 2 months or 5 outings" i replaced the impeller and points FYI.

any suggestions or ideas on what may be wrong?

I was thinking it was seized but im pretty sure the prop would be locked, right?

The prop should move freely in neutral because its just that, neutral. Put it in gear and turn the prop, it should spin the crank and flywheel, although it might be hard. Try spinning the flywheel by hand, if it wont move its most likely seized.

thank you, i appreciate your help.

I cap turn the flywheel by hand seems to have good compression with just a hand turn. when i turn the key they starter will jump up and turn the flywheel but no cranking just a load ear wrenching noise. could it be the starter? but with it turning the flywheel it should start or try to but no. Im lost and marina cant look at it till sept.

any suggestions?

i dont understand. You say the starter turns the flywheel? If it does that is considered "cranking". Perhaps you mean it cranks but wont turn over?

maybe im not saying it right.

my idea of cranking is....when the motor is trying to turn over and you can hear compression.

the noise i get is similar to the sound your car would make if you turn the key when its already running.
