Model# 507y8c
Serial# 1199

Motor turns over and has good spark and fuel flow. It turns over 3 to 4 times and then backfires and shoots a 2' flame out the exaust port. Is this a timing problem and if so, how do I set it.

Thanks
I have never had this motor in the water, but it is possible. The prop looks a little rough but not like it hit somthing hard. I will check the key.

Sounds like a busted flywheel key. Did you hit something when you last ran the motor?

Manual says it could be one of the following

Cracked spark plug insulator
Carbon path in distributer cap
Improper timing
Crossed spark plug wires

Ok, One more ?. I don't see anything that even looks like a distrbutor cap.

Hehe , I am not a super mechanic but I think positive thoughts while I try to be. :D

(I did raise a 57' Evinrude Lark from the dead once)

Re: 1988 Force 50

Dont have a distrib...Before goinmg any futher, try switching the plug wires.
You may have inadvertantly transposed them, or a nighborhood kid may havbe decided to drive you crazy.

If they are one the right plugs, the two pulse leads, (one going to each of the coils) are backwards. These connectors aree usually behind the bracket, between the coils --- gotta pull the entire bracket to get at them.
If all looks 'by the book' ,pull the flywheel, and inspect the flywheel key/groove, as sugjested earlier by Eurolarva. And where he refers to 'distributor', just replace with cd pack/trigger. While you're in there, check the trigger, and the wires comming out of it. Did you remove any of these wires? If so, maybee you have them reversed
