I have been running this motor for a couple months and havent seen this yet. It has ran strong and started every time. Idles fine too. Previous owner must have had it dialed in. One of the reasons I bought the boat. It started right up and ran for 10 minutes strong when we looked at it. Not even a hiccup. And has been running great since them . I Never noticed any oil leaks until yesterday after a trip to the lake.

I started using Pennzoil without Sta-bil at first and then started adding it about 3 trips ago. Ive been going through about 3/4 to 7/8 tank every trip. We run up and down the lake alot and troll quite a bit looking for fish.

With the stabil and Pennzoil i hadnt noticed any oil drips. But the last time I went out I switched to Quicksilver Plus and added stabil as usual. I get back and the next day i noticed maybe an 1/8 tspn blackish oil had dripped onto the garage floor. It looks like its coming from below the cavitation plate where the exhaust port is. It has a burnt oil/gas smell to it so i highly doubt its gear oil.

Any ideas why this is? Is it unburnt oil/stabil? Should I give her a good hard rev before loading after the days endto blow it out? Is it not a good idea to mix oils?

Not sure If i should be concerned or not. This is my first boat and learning as i go.

Thanks for any help.

Your notice are pretty normal for a two stroker.
They does not burn all fuelmixture and the unburned drips out of the exhaust at the gearcase/LU.

Running at higher RPMs or WOT will burn out more of the fuelmixture and running at idle/trolling will make it to produce more unburned fuelmixture.
The setting of the air/fuel mixture screw at each carb also has an significane meaning. To rich setting will end up with more unburned fuel.
If you starting to play with the mixture setting DO NOT set it leaner then 1 turn out from lightly seated.
It can end up with melted pistons. 1-1,5 turn out is a good aim and the engine will run properly at this setting.

Different brands and typs of two stroke oil will produce more or less of smoke and "black oil residue" and it is your experience which you prefer..
It is your choice and how much money you are willing to spend. BUT you must use TCW-3 oil.
There are many threads here about what typ and brand is the best.

One thing is clearly though, do not use oil for aircooled two stroke engines.
You must use TCW-3 oil (two stroke watercool).

Ok. I am definitely using TCW-3 oil. I have not messed with the idle screws yet but that may be something I will do next time out. I may go back to the Pennzoil oil as well. I read that Quicksilver is a decent oil but i didnt have any oil leaking whatsoever with the Pennzoil. I am also going to lay off the sta-bil for a few tanks of gas because we have been going every week. Maybe that will help as well. And Im not sure it even makes a difference on how well it runs. I didnt really notice much improvement to be honest. Its that 360* vapor technology stuff. Its supposed to help deal with the ethanol.

Also now that I remember we did idle quite a bit before we headed to the no wake zone last time out. And it was quite a stretch to get to the dock. So next time i will run her WOT for a bit before we get to the no wake and see if it makes a difference. . Thanks for the advice.

IF??? the motors running good??? DON'T mess with it.
Messing with the air screws can just cause trouble.
You can check them, turn them in slowly and count the turns so you can turn them back to where they are.

The 85 usually work best at 1 and about 1/8th to a 1/16th out.
The factory sent out a bulletin that said turn them out 1 turn and leave them.
Mine have run great at the 1 1/8 for years.

Ok will do Jerry. Thanks for the tip. BTW. I know you had the 88 bayliner with the twin 85hp on it. So what oil worked best for you? Pennzoil? Thats what Ive been using. This all happened after i switched to the Quicksilver. I thought Id try the stuff out for the heck of it cuz i thought maybe itd cut down on the smoking (which isnt terribly bad) but Im not sure if its better or worth the money. I used the quicksilver full synthetic "plus" i believe.

I use Wally World oil.
The more expensive oils like Amzol and other synthetics can make less smoke but I'm cheap!!!
The oil as long as it's TCW-3 it will work.
These motors if idled for any time will smoke and need to be run to clean out the oil built up in the motor.
