Does anyone know how to test the trigger on this particular engine? My guess is to use a multimeter on ohms setting to test the resistance but i cannot find any info on which wires to test.

There are 3 pairs.
They should have a tag on each pair.
Don't loose the tags.
SOP: I replaced ALL the connectors on the trigger and the stator just in case.

The color code means nothing as they changed the colors every so often.
The later aftermarket ones only have one wire per cyl. ???

outboardignitiondotcom or CDI Ignition both have test procedures for your motor.

Usually what happens to the trigger is the wire breaks under the shrinkwrap and causes a miss.
Or the harness wears through and shorts out.
I've only ran across one bad trigger in 35+ years.

Thanks for the info. I found a couple wires that had corroded almost completely underneath the shrink wrap as you said. Put all new connectors on all of the wires but still no luck. No spark on number one cylinder, intermittent spark on number two cylinder, good spark on number three cylinder.

The odd thing is after replacing the stater and one of the coil packs the symptoms are completely opposite as to what they began with. At first it was good spark a number one cylinder intermittent spark on number two cylinder and no spark on number three. Complete opposite now. I just can't figure this thing out.

You try swapping the packs?do that and post the results.
A new stator can be bad?

I tried swapping modules with the packs and no luck. Tested the resistance of the new stater and a test fine (800ish). Tested the three sets of wires coming out of the trigger and it also test fine at (50ish). Multiple people have told me it sounds like a bad connection or a bad ground but I have been through literally every wire it seems like. I'm starting to wonder if it is my ignition switch, like the key switch that I start the motor with. Is that possible?

I guess I should also mention here more recently back when it ran good it would fail to kill whenever I try to turn the motor off. I would have to turn the key switch a couple times for it to finally kill. Not sure if that matters but figured I would add this info.

Try to unhook the kill switch wire at the terminal .
It is the black/yellow one. It can be a white one too.

No, at the engine side.(where the switch-wire meets the packs
Use a jumper wire to ground to kill the engine.
Check the switch for continuity in the off position if repeatedly test good; check the wiring for bad sections

I spray WD40 in the ignition and work it a few times.
But if it fails to kill when turned off?? Change it.

Just wanted to update. Disconnect the kill wires at the terminal board (White magneto, blue magneto wires) and I got spark again. Changed out the ignition switch and it fixed all of the problems. Thanks to everyone who responded. Hopefully this thread helps someone in the future.
