This engine is running my beloved Bayliner Capri. Thanks to my brother-in-law and a close call with the bottom of a lake, the propeller is damaged and the "fin" under the propeller is also damaged (small crack which probably need welding and bent out of shape). Am looking for thoughts on how to restore to pre-brotherinlaw condition. I will replace the prop if someone can tell me which prop I should buy but am really interested to hear what you have to say about repairing the damage to the fin (it might be called a skeg? also).

Thanks.

Karl Byrne

Hello, Karl.

It would be a lot less expensive to have your prop repaired if you have a prop shop nearby. If it is not repairable, they can sell you a replacement (take it with you).

Many prop shops also do repairs on damaged skegs.

Failing that, you can install a SkegGard. I use them on all my boats. Cabelas has them for about $100USD.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the reply JB. Am in Ireland and there is not a lot of choice in repair shops! Anyway, took it there today and they told me that they would have to take out the gear seals or they would melt when welding the crack on the skeg/fin (it is part of the bottom leg of the engine and cannot be taken off). They would do the weld, re-condition the prop and then put gear seals back together. Also told me that they will have to tune the engine when prop and weld done. Does this make sense to you? Just want to be sure I'm not being ripped off! Will be buying a new prop during the summer (brother-in-law going to US for a month!). Do you know the best online place to buy one? Should I contact Bayliner to find out which replacement prop to buy? Thanks for the info on the skeg protector. Will look at that.

Karl
