was wondering if you guys could guide me in a direction, I have a 1988 bayliner with a 1988 force 85 hp I have a unique problem and check the sticky at the top of the page for the charging problem .. My boat doesnt charge with the red wire connected to the rectifier or at least the minimum doesnt charge more then 12.5 volts with the red wire connected ... If i unplug the red wire it will charge at 15 to 16 volts under accel and 13.2 at idle.. My question is IS it ok to charge it this way with the wire disconnected ... I replaced the rectifier with the one from radio shack and checked the schematic from the clymer book... Do i have the wires on the wrong terminal possibly .... What color wires go to what terminals on the rectifier..

THanks and i hope my post isnt to confusing

Re: 1988 force rectifier

The rectifier should be marked with a pos and neg terminal. The two yellow wired from the stator attach to the AC terminals and the red attaches to the POS. there will be a black wire that attaches to the NEG.

I am reasonably certain that you have something incorrectly wired since with the red wire disconnected from the rectifier, your engine will not be charging the battery at all and system voltage should read battery voltage.

The engine will still run well because the ignition system is self energising and completely separate from the charging system.
