I have a 1988 Four Winns 180 that recently had the motor lock up. It has a 4.3L in it now and looking at the possibility of putting a newer 4.3 in it or possible going with a 5.0. I even found a nice 454 near me but that might be too much for that boat. Just looking for some input on what route to go and what others have done in the past. Thanks

I have a similar boat and have thought of the same thing. Keep in mind that the gear ratio in the outdrive might not be optimal for the 5.0 vs the 4.3 you have and also, you will have to change the exhaust system (partially or completely, depending on which engine package you have). The engine mount pads probably are long enough to accommodate the V8 which is about 3.5" longer. Measure in front of the engine you have now 3.5" forward to see how much room you have. I'm not 100% sure but I do think the 180 could be ordered with a V8. If you decide to do it I'd go with a 5.7. Same size and weight more HP and torque.
Due to the extra expense of changing other things if I had to change the engine soon I'd stick with a 4.3, but upgrade to the Vortec and keep the 4bbl carb.
