1988 Four Winns OMC 4.3 flywheel price quote

My boats flywheel is shot - you can hear the starter whizzing with no bite on the flywheel. My mechanic says it will be $1000 to repair. He's got to take out the whole engine to get at it,that's why its so expensive. Is that price too high? Is he taking advantage of my lack of mech knowledge? Just wanted another opinion on this repair quote.

hi engine R&R sounds HIgh far as take out and in only avg $595.00 labor if thats incl parts etc maybe not.. but last yr me and uncle R&R 4.3 our selverous with a borrowed cherry picker ist time we ever did it took a lot of hours but saved $. now problem you my find is if available is orig fly wheel very expensive. but here what we did.. after engine was hanging out of boat we took flywheel off went to autozone and they had the exact same ringgear we took that to machine shop they changed out ring gear thinks was $40.00 labor and reinstalled. but could of just had ring gear flipped over as other side was like new could of saved ringgear price but mach shop ben same labor.. then had starter rebuilt $65.00 voila ! as the starter teeth was chipped a little so now both like new..

It really depends on the access to the engine. I've had engines that took all day to get out after disassembling half the boat and engine to get it out. Going back together is even slower. Some I have removed, replaced a coupler, and reinstalled in 4 hours.
Then there is the hourly rate that isn't even talked about.
He is also probably adding in the parts and time to replace it.
Is he replacing the complete flywheel or just the ring gear.
Way to many variables to say if it's a fair price or not.. Of course some say everything is overpriced based on their boat which may be completely different.
