1988 fourwinns sundowner problems

Hello!I have a 1988 fourwinns sundowner that is giving me trouble. The motor only reaches about 3200 rpm,s and then starts to cut out and backfire,.... But will run just fine at about 1200 rpm, the motor is a 350 chevy, 4 barrel quadrajet carb. Could this be fuel pump problem? As the motor was running i placed my finger over the end of the gas inlet line to the pump but i could not feel any sucktion... But motor still starts and run. I had motor running from a coffe can with gas when i checked it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

That is a tough one to figure out. Could be alot of different things. Timing could be off, eletric problems, and fuel problems could all produce that same result.

try changing the spark plugs and the spacing...i ran into that problem i have the same boat and chevy engines really dont take well to champion spark plugs and check the spacing also..they were spaced at 45 when they call for 35..

If you have been using fuel with 10% or more alcohol you may have dried out some gaskets in your carb. I had a similar problem with the same engine and ended up having to replace the carb. Then I used only Standard, Shell, or Mobil fuel. This year I am adding an additive recommended by the dealer to use with older boats that weren't originally set-up to use today's no-lead/high alcohol fuels. Before replacing the carb I had no "passing gear." The boat ran O.K. at low speeds but when I floored it the engine bogged down seriously. Now it jumps out of the water.

check to see if your points are loose, pitted, corroded, etc. make sure the dwell and timing is set correctly as well. i just fixed my buddies boat with the same exact problem.
