Hey guys, I'm in need of some advice. Some family friends of mine have a 1988 Glasstream 182 Caravelle that they bought brand new. I know this guy has taken care of the boat and has spent most of its time in the garage. The boat itself is in really good condition. The red flake gel coat isn't faded and the interior looks good thanks to being stored in the garage. It's been sitting for 3 or 4 years i think, but everything is suppose to be working fine. If i can remember correctly it has a 2.3L (or 2.something) mercruiser(i believe).

Anyway he is looking to get rid of it and I'm trying to decide if i want to get myself into this. Hopefully it will just take a new battery, cleaning out the fuel tank and new fuel lines, and maybe cleaning out the carbs. I don't really want to buy this thing if its gonna cause me a lot of problems, but what makes it tempting is that he only wants $1,500 for it. I could be wrong, so is this a good deal?

If anyone knows anything about this boat that would be great and if anyone can convince me if this is a good idea or not that would be great.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Not the exact same boat, but my first boat was a 1992 Glasstream 172 GLX. They aren't very well known boats, but I thought it was a pretty well built. I'm sure you have researched - the company went tango uniform a while back, then another company opened up under the Glasstream name in the later 1990's. I had a tough time finding info on the originals, but at the same time, there isn't much to know. Mine had the 3.0 mercruiser. Check to see what engine it is for sure and make sure you can still get parts for it. Also check condiiton of the hull, floor and transom. Everything else is up to you on cosmetics. $1500 could be a good deal or could be a pile. Have to look it over carefully and decide.

If it's a 2.3L it's not a Mercruiser it's an OMC. Don't buy it. Parts and service dwindling for OMCs and will be even worse for that particular motor.
