I had my looper checked out by a mechanic and he said the stator was bad. No juice coming out of it. I took off the flywheel and removed the stator. The wires on the stator were flimzy and soft. It had gouge markes dug into it in the same direction as the flywheel travel over it. But my question is the flywheel. I looked on the inside of the flywheel where the stator travels and it looked like the protective coating had worn off in spots exposing what looks like copper lines. Is this normal? What are the gouge marks from? Normal wear and tear? Does this mean I need a new flywheel as well? Help!

Looking inside the flywheel very carefully, check to be sure that all of the magnets are solidly mounted, that none have come loose and moved so as to contact the stator.

Looking at the stator, on the outer face of the steel laminations, are there contact/wear patterns? Usual signs of a shifted magnet

Look closely at each of the coils/windings, they are laquar coated copper wire, sometimes when a coil goes bad it may expand in diameter, making it fat enough to contact the flat surface of the underside of the flywheel.

Loose magnets = get new flywheel

Expanded coil/winding = get new stator

Re: 1988 Johnson 120 Looper Stator Que

I didnt see any magnets on the inside of the flywheel. Just spots where some type of protective coating is rubbed off. In the areas where its rubbed off, I see what looks like copper lines. As if these copper lines are meant to be protected by this coating. I placed the stator in the flywheel on the workbench and the stator got sucked in by a magnetic field. I can see there is very little clearance during travel. I dont see where a magnet could fit anywhere between them. Maybe the stator DID expand and touch the flywheel rubbing off the coating. If thats the case, replace the flywheel as well as the stator?
