Just picked up a 1988 Grady White 20' Overnighter with a 1988 Johnson 200hp with a bad trim motor. Got a new trim motor from the boat shop for $120 and need some advice on how to replace. I have heard conflicting recomendations on what is possible.

Mechanic #1: the outboard needs to be removed from the boat to sucessfully get to the back bolt on the trim motor (3 bolt motor)

Mechanic #2: The trim assembly can be removed by taking out all bolts/pins and pulling the the entire trim assembly out the back of the transom bracket....to do so the engine must be hoisted as high as possible once the top pin is removed to allow enough room for removal.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Either way you look at it if this mtr has lived in salt water the bolts for the tilt mtr may not come out with out some heat applied to them. If you have a hoist it may be easier to hang the mtr and the work on it. If not you'll probably have to take the whole unit out. Either way it's not a fun job. If you break the bolts then it's drill and heli-coil time. Been there and done that.

in my shop, we us a Cherry Picker, and dismount the motor. Just makes the job much easier and faster.

All the bolts/pins are free.....somehow. Think I am going to try option #2 and try not to remove the motor. I dont have a engine hoist, but I do have a big oak tree..I figure Ill double a rope around a big limb to hold the engine up as high as possible once the top pin is out and try to pull the sucker out the back.
