I have a 1988 Johson 6 hp and i have a little problem with the starter. When im tryin to start it, i pull the rope to start it, but the rope only goes in about half way. Then i have to take the hood off and feed it back in. It starts up and everything, its just a pain in the butt to feed it in each time. I know this is not a big problem, but i was just wondering if any of you guys had any tips on how to fix this. THANKS!!

Hi, Remkid.

There are a couple of things that can cause incomplete recoil.

One is a weakening spring in the recoil mechanism.

But far more often it is fraying and swelling of the rope from absorbing oil. This calls for a new rope.

PLEASE do not attempt to service it without a Service Manual. If the spring gets loose it is quite dangerous.

Good luck. :)

As JB has stated, that spring is somewhat dangerous. I would try a little WD40 first to see if that might help. If that's of no help, again as JB has stated, a manual would be a good thing to have.

JB and Joe--since you're in this thread, I have a recoil starter question. On the OMC 50's model recoil starter pulleys there are timing marks which need to be aligned with the recoil housing so that the piston is in the right position at the start of the pull. On my 56 Johnson, the marks on the pulley are misaligned about 90 degrees due to rope stretching, or something, but the rope starts its engagement after about 4 inches of pull. Is it critical that the alignment marks all match up, or is there "fudge" room?

Hi, 7.5.

When you have a new question, make a new thread so people will see your question.

The alignment of the recoil starter to the crank was to allow the "starter" to get some momentum before hitting compression resistance. It really made a difference on bigger engines without compression release. :)

JB--Thanks for the info, and I'll make sure I get the new subject out onto the board next time...the knowledge you experts share is indispensible to those of us who are un-mechanics.
